TAIPEI (Central News Agency) — U.S. Congresswomen Lucy McBath and Valerie Foushee arrived in Taiwan on June 16 for a five-day visit, during which they will meet with President Lai Qingde and Vice President萧美琴 to discuss critical issues including U.S.-Taiwan security cooperation, economic and trade relations, and regional stability. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu expressed appreciation for the continued congressional engagement, reaffirming the deepening ties between Taiwan and the United States.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced that McBath, Vice Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Foushee, also a CBC member, are visiting Taiwan from June 16 to 20. During their stay, they will meet with President Lai and Vice President萧美琴, and attend a reception hosted by Foreign Minister Wu. The discussions will focus on key areas such as security, trade, technological collaboration, and regional developments.

MOFA noted that the Congressional Black Caucus, established in 1971, has long advocated for civil rights, economic development, social welfare, and criminal justice reform for African Americans. Beyond domestic issues, both lawmakers have shown strong interest in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, high-tech talent development, and human rights—areas where Taiwan and the U.S. can deepen cooperation.

This marks the first visit to Taiwan for both congresswomen during their tenure. The timing is significant: 2024 marks the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s direct presidential elections. Additionally, June 19 is Juneteenth, a U.S. federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery and symbolizing the pursuit of equality and human rights. The visit during this period underscores the shared values of freedom and democracy between Taiwan and the United States.

Foreign Minister Wu welcomed the congressional delegation, emphasizing that Taiwan and the U.S. are vital partners in security and economic prosperity. The two sides continue to strengthen collaboration in defense, technology, and supply chain resilience. Building on this solid foundation, Taiwan will steadily advance its partnership with the U.S. across multiple domains, with a focus on enhancing self-defense capabilities and societal resilience. Taiwan remains committed to safeguarding its hard-won democracy and working closely with the U.S. and like-minded countries to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
