African Swine Fever Key News

(Taipei, June 16, reporter Wang Hong-guo) To comprehensively prevent the threat of major swine diseases such as African swine fever, the New Taipei City Government today held a 'Disaster Prevention and Response War Game for Major Swine Diseases.' The city government emphasized that through rigorous drills by relevant agencies, all epidemic prevention measures will be precisely implemented to minimize risks.

The war game was held at the city hall auditorium, gathering approximately 105 participants from agencies including the Council of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA), Veterinary Research Institute, 16 departments of the New Taipei City Government, district offices, and the New Taipei City Meat Market. They jointly conducted simulation drills and observation exercises for major swine disease prevention. Mr. Lai Min-chuan, Deputy Director of APHIA’s Taichung Branch, was invited to attend and share practical experiences.

Participants conducted drills based on scenarios such as illegal feeding of kitchen waste at pig farms, sale of meat products with unknown origins or without official slaughter certification, pigs exhibiting foot-and-mouth disease-like symptoms such as blisters and lameness, and suspected African swine fever cases detected at meat markets. The exercise covered three phases: 'Preparation Period with Strict Audits,' 'Response Period with Rapid Reaction,' and 'Recovery Period with Reconstruction Planning.'

Shen Xi-hui, Director of the Agriculture Bureau, stated that through this war game, the city is building a strong animal disease defense line for citizens, closely monitoring livestock farm safety, and ensuring uninterrupted supply of high-quality domestic pork. This allows citizens to enjoy zongzi during this year’s Dragon Boat Festival with confidence and peace of mind, celebrating the holiday safely. (Edited by Lin Shu-hui) 1150616
