(Central News Agency reporter Li Hsien-feng, Hualien County, June 16) The Taroko National Park Administration will launch a four-day 'Jiulai Mountain Area Clean Mountain Activity' from June 18 to 21, calling on volunteers to participate. As the event falls during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, hikers who have already completed their入园 (entry permit) applications for the Jiulai Mountain area are also welcome to spontaneously join the cleanup efforts to help protect the mountain and forest environment.
The Administration explained that during the four-day cleanup trek, participants will depart at noon on Day 1 from the Jiulai Trailhead, pass through Xiaoqilai, and arrive at Chenggong Mountain Hut. On Day 2, they will hike from Chenggong Mountain Hut to Qilai Ridge Hut. On Day 3, after cleaning the surroundings of the mountain hut, they will return to Chenggong Mountain Hut. On Day 4, they will conduct cleanup activities around Chenggong Mountain Hut before descending the mountain. Volunteers will collect litter along the trails and around the huts, pack it up, and carry it down the mountain.
The Administration emphasized that this 'clean mountain journey' aims to rally passionate volunteers—not only as a physical challenge but also as a meaningful act of environmental stewardship. Hikers who happen to be climbing Jiulai Mountain during the event are encouraged to join the effort if they have the capacity.
Director Liu Shou-li of the Taroko National Park Administration invited the public to experience the beauty of Jiulai Mountain’s alpine ecosystem. He urged hikers to fill their cameras with stunning mountain views and their hearts with memories, but also to carry their trash back down the mountain, collectively protecting the natural environment.
Jiulai Mountain straddles Nantou and Hualien counties, standing at 3,560 meters above sea level. It is known as the 'One Wonder' among Taiwan’s 'Five Peaks, Three Sharp Peaks, and One Wonder.' With its steep terrain, dark geological features, and rapidly changing climate, it is nicknamed 'Black Jiulai' by hikers. Its breathtaking scenery attracts many adventurers. The Administration reminds the public that the Jiulai Mountain area has unpredictable weather and rugged terrain, requiring thorough preparation. In addition to proper physical training and suitable hiking gear, visitors must complete the入园 (entry permit) application and strictly adhere to the 'Leave No Trace' principles.
