The Social Democrats (Social Democrats, abbreviated as SD) recently announced a restructuring of the ruling coalition, excluding the controversial populist party 'Dawn of Nemunas' (Nemunas Dawn) and inviting the centrist alliance 'Democrats For Lithuania' to join instead. SD party leader Mindaugas Šimkevičius announced today that he will take responsibility for forming the new government and serve as Prime Minister.

The decision to restructure the coalition stems from controversies surrounding 'Dawn of Nemunas', including its leader's conviction for anti-Semitic remarks and policy disagreements on strategic issues. According to Lithuania's National Radio and Television (LRT), the new coalition will be led by the Social Democrats and include 'Democrats For Lithuania' and the 'Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union', holding 75 out of 141 parliamentary seats.

Šimkevičius announced via social media that he has decided to lead the formation of the new government and assume the role of Prime Minister. He emphasized that the new administration will focus on alleviating the burden of rising prices and living costs, reducing social inequality and poverty, promoting economic growth, improving job quality, and ensuring access to healthcare.

He also stressed that Lithuania will continue strengthening its defense capabilities and pursue a more proactive, consistent, and results-oriented foreign policy. Šimkevičius will succeed current Prime Minister Inga Rūginienė, who has led the government since last autumn.

According to LRT, the new cabinet will see at least four ministerial changes. With 'Democrats For Lithuania' rejoining the coalition, the Energy, Health, and Agriculture ministries will be assigned to the party, while the Social Democrats will take charge of the Environment Ministry. The formal agreement among the three parties is expected to be signed within this week.
