(CNA reporter Chiang I-Ching, Yunlin County, June 16) Formosa Plastics Group today recognized plant units that demonstrated exceptional performance over the past year in energy conservation, carbon reduction, circular economy, and resource recycling. Four plants achieved significant emission and energy reductions through methods such as AI-driven operational optimization, enhancing their green competitiveness.

Formosa Plastics Group held the '2026 Energy Conservation, Emission Reduction, and Circular Economy Outstanding Department Awards Ceremony' at its Mailiao Industrial Park in Yunlin County, honoring departments that excelled in energy and carbon reduction, circular economy, and resource reuse. The event was chaired by Nan Ya Plastics Corporation CEO Tsou Ming-Jen, with Yunlin County Deputy Magistrate Chen Pi-Chun witnessing the company's tangible progress in green transformation and sustainable development.

Tsou Ming-Jen stated that Formosa Plastics has set a long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. By 2025, the group's total greenhouse gas emissions had decreased from a peak of 61.48 million tons in 2007 to 42.6 million tons—a 31% reduction. This not only achieves the 2025 short-term target of 20% emission reduction ahead of schedule but also approaches the 2030 mid-term goal of 35% reduction.

As of the end of 2025, the company has cumulatively implemented 28,082 water and energy-saving improvement projects. Among them, 5,496 water-saving projects have been completed, saving an annual volume equivalent to 30.9 Shihmen Reservoirs. Rainwater recovery reached 7.7 million tons, sufficient to supply 42 days of domestic water demand for Yunlin County. Meanwhile, 22,586 energy-saving projects have been completed, reducing annual carbon emissions by 18 million tons—equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of 47,000 Daan Forest Parks.

This year, four plants received the 'Top Energy-Saving and Emission-Reduction Plant of the Year' award. The Formosa Plastics High-Density Polyethylene Plant introduced variable-frequency drives and AI-based smart optimization, reducing unit product electricity consumption by 6.18% below target and cutting annual carbon emissions by 5,172 tons. Nan Ya Plasticizers Plant improved its entire air compression system holistically, demonstrating systematic management, achieving 14.17% water savings and 4.92% steam savings, with 316 tons of annual carbon reduction. Formosa Chemicals & Fibre's Styrene Hia-Feng Plant promoted thermal energy recovery and introduced a new variable-frequency magnetic levitation chiller, reducing unit product carbon emissions by 16% and cutting 2,634 tons annually. Finally, the Plastics Refining Plant II achieved 6.15% electricity savings through comprehensive energy and resource optimization, ranking first within the Plastics Corporation.

Deputy Magistrate Chen Pi-Chun noted that Formosa's energy and emission reduction achievements are remarkable. Over the years, cross-departmental collaboration has enabled the company to meet its goals, investing over NT$3 billion and generating NT$7.8 billion in efficiency. This challenges the traditional belief that sustainability and emission reduction come with higher costs, proving instead that a superior circular economy can be created.
