(Taipei, June 16 - Reporter Huang Li-yun) A man with a history of drug-impaired driving was riding his motorcycle on the evening of June 14 when he was stopped by police in Taipei's Wanhua District for failing to signal while changing lanes. Officers detected a strong plastic-like odor emanating from the man, prompting an on-site saliva drug screening test, which returned a positive result for ketamine, a Class III controlled substance. The case was referred for prosecution, and the Taipei District Prosecutors Office approved a petition for preventive detention.

The Wanhua Police Precinct of the Taipei City Police Department issued a press release on the evening of June 16, stating that officers from Longshan Police Station observed a male motorcyclist failing to use his turn signal while changing lanes on Guangzhou Street around 8:00 PM on June 14, and immediately conducted a traffic stop.

During questioning, officers noticed a strong plastic-like smell coming from the man, later identified as Chen. A rapid saliva drug test was administered on-site, which showed a positive reaction for ketamine, a Class III narcotic. Chen was taken back to the station for further investigation.

Chen, who runs a business and has a prior record of drug-impaired driving, admitted to using drugs before leaving his home. After interrogation, the case was transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on charges of endangering public safety.

The Wanhua Police Division emphasized its strict enforcement against behaviors that endanger public safety, such as drug-impaired and drunk driving, and urged the public to remain vigilant and reject drugs. (Editor: Hsiao Po-wen) 1150616
