According to Central News Agency (reporter Hsiao Po-yang, Nantou County, June 16), Tou 89 Line has been repeatedly disrupted by landslides and mudflows in recent days due to rainfall. Today, a slope collapse occurred again at the 28.3-kilometer mark, blocking the road. The Nantou County Government has dispatched machinery for emergency repairs and warns that there remains a high risk of falling rocks, landslides, and mudflows along the route, urging travelers to detour.
The Lixing Industrial Road (Tou 89 Line) in Ren'ai Township is prone to landslides and rockfalls whenever it rains. Affected by continuous frontal rainfall over recent days, the Nantou County Government reported today that mudslides and earthflows have occurred consecutively at the 18.2 km, 28.3 km, and 36.5 km markers. The 28.3 km section experienced another slope collapse today, completely blocking the road. The county's Public Works Department has ordered its contracted maintenance team to dispatch heavy machinery for urgent repairs.
The Public Works Department stated that the 18.2 km and 36.5 km sections currently maintain basic passability, while the 28.3 km section remains under active repair and is temporarily closed to traffic. The county aims to reopen the road by noon today. Prolonged rainfall in the mountainous area has saturated soil on slopes, causing earth movement at multiple points along Tou 89 Line. Combined with mudflows, many sections of the road are covered in debris, with scattered rockfalls occurring. Cleanup and dredging operations are being accelerated.
Due to unstable slopes and the ongoing risk of falling debris, the county has instructed repair crews to prioritize safety while working urgently. Given unstable weather conditions, the risk of rockfalls, landslides, and mudflows remains high along Tou 89 Line. The public is strongly advised to avoid the route. Those who must use it should comply with traffic controls and avoid entering mountain roads at night. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150616
