(Tainan, June 16, CNA by reporter Su Chih-yu) Brock Dykxhoorn, pitcher for the CPBL's Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions, has become a topic of fan discussion due to his low run support this season. Upon first learning of the term 'asking heaven' (wen tian), he said he doesn't mind the difficulty in securing wins, but added: 'I hope luck will eventually turn our way.'
Among pitchers this season in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) who meet the innings requirement for the ERA leaderboard, Dykxhoorn's run support ratio of 1.94 ranks third from the bottom, ahead only of Nivaldo Rodriguez (1.23) of the CTBC Brothers and Drew Gagnon (1.88) of the Wei Chuan Dragons.
As a result, despite maintaining a 1.94 ERA, Dykxhoorn's win-loss record stands at 2-4 since the season began. This unfortunate fate has prompted fans to cry out 'wen tian'—a term originally used for former Fubon Guardians pitcher Mike Loree. When Dykxhoorn learned this during a media interview today, he smiled and said: 'I really like Mike Loree, so maybe we have something in common.'
Dykxhoorn admitted he has noticed the low offensive support this year but emphasized it's beyond his control. 'In my previous 17-win season, luck also played a role. As a starting pitcher, my job is to create winning opportunities for the team every game. I can't control everything, and no one wins alone.'
In his last start, Dykxhoorn pitched six innings, allowing one run. He left the game with a four-run lead, but the win was lost after the lead was erased. Still, the team ultimately won. Dykxhoorn commented: 'We ended up winning, and that's what matters most. There have also been times I got the win despite not deserving it. So, things usually balance out in the end.'
