(Central News Agency reporter Yeh Su-ping, Taipei, June 15) Today marks Police Day. President Lai Ching-te stated that police officers are guardians of the people, and the government has a responsibility to stand firmly behind them. In addition to raising allowances for criminal investigations and demanding duties in March of this year, the government will continue enhancing technological enforcement, forensic identification, and communication technology capabilities. It also plans to procure tactical bulletproof vests and tactical holster sets to strengthen frontline officers' safety.
President Lai posted on Facebook, expressing gratitude to all police officers nationwide: "Thank you all for your hard work."
The President noted that police work is extremely demanding—whether it's patrolling late at night, managing traffic, investigating cases, securing large events, or responding immediately to emergencies. Every lawful duty and professional judgment contributes to a safer Taiwan.
He highlighted that over the past decade, Taiwan's rate of violent crimes has continuously declined—a result achieved through the dedication and even life-risking efforts of police officers. Taiwan's admirable public safety is thanks to police being the most crucial guardians.
To respond to rapid technological advancements and evolving crime patterns, the government continues to provide greater support, including accelerating technological enforcement, improving forensic and anti-explosive capabilities, strengthening communication-based investigative abilities, and replacing outdated police vehicles. For personal equipment, the government will procure "tactical bulletproof vests" and "tactical holster sets" to enhance frontline officers' safety.
Given the high intensity and risks of police work, the government raised criminal investigation and demanding-duty allowances in March. The adjustment now includes not only municipalities but also 13 non-municipal counties on the main island, increasing payments by up to 40%—a direct recognition of police contributions.
The President emphasized that police officers are the people's protectors, and it is the government's duty to be their strongest support. He called for continued joint efforts to ensure greater public peace, social stability, and national security. (Edited by Wan Shu-chang) 1150615
