(CNA reporter Hsieh Ching-wen, New Taipei, June 15) — In the Yu Shan Cup youth baseball tournament, Kaohsiung City defeated Chiayi City 2-1 today. Team captain Chuan Yung-Loh recorded one hit and one stolen base. Chuan’s strength lies in his wide defensive range and consistency at shortstop, and senior player Chang Yu-Hao has encouraged him to pursue the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) draft.

In the 115th Yu Shan Cup youth baseball tournament, Kaohsiung faced Chiayi City in the losers’ bracket. Chuan Yung-Loh started as the seventh batter and played shortstop. In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the score tied 1-1, Chuan led off with a single and stole second base. Kaohsiung capitalized on an error and a hit-by-pitch walk to load the bases. With the bases full, Lo Wei-Chieh drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing Chuan to score the go-ahead run. Kaohsiung held on to win by a one-run margin.

Kaohsiung team manager Shih Hung-Chieh stated that Chuan’s strength lies in his solid shortstop defense and base-running speed, though his hitting power and technique still need improvement.

Among this year’s senior high school shortstops, Shih believes Chuan stands out for his defensive range and reliability. Serving as team captain, Chuan has demonstrated leadership, guiding younger teammates through his actions on the field and anchoring a critical middle-infield position.

Chuan revealed that he only decided last month to enter the CPBL draft after graduation. While confident in his defense, he acknowledges that his hitting quality and power need enhancement.

Chuan mentioned that Chang Yu-Hao, a fellow alumnus from Pumen High School and current catcher for the CPBL’s Fubon Guardians, has encouraged him to pursue a professional career. Chuan has been following Chang’s performance in the top league, saying, 'I think he’s amazing.'

Chuan has prior international experience with the Pony Little League during middle school and is competing in his second Yu Shan Cup. He hopes to deliver strong performances and earn a spot on the national youth team. (Edited by Li Shu-Hua) 1150615
