(Central News Agency reporter Wu Bowei, Brussels, May 15) — The European Union (EU) Council announced today the addition of 81 new sanctions targets against Russia. Those sanctioned are primarily involved in energy revenue, the military-industrial complex, political propaganda, and human rights violations.

According to a press release issued by the EU Council, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that the new sanctions aim to increase pressure on Russia and compel it to end the war. These measures directly target Russia’s military-industrial complex, shadow fleet, and networks supporting Moscow’s hybrid warfare against Europe.

She said the 21st round of sanctions is currently being prepared, with each measure further restricting Russia’s operational space. The data speaks for itself: Western sanctions are estimated to have cost Russia between €1 trillion and €1.3 trillion (approximately NT$36.5 trillion to NT$47.5 trillion), gradually undermining the foundation of Russia’s war economy.

The 81 newly sanctioned entities consist of 34 individuals and 47 organizations.

The EU Council reiterated its continued, firm, and unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. The EU will continue to coordinate with like-minded partners and allies to provide comprehensive political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support to Ukraine and its people.

The EU Council welcomed ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war and fully supports Ukraine’s negotiations. It also urges Russia to agree to a comprehensive, unconditional, and immediate ceasefire and to engage in meaningful negotiations to achieve a just and lasting peace.
