Starting yesterday afternoon, Tainan experienced multiple waves of intense rainfall. According to statistics from the Tainan City Water Resources Bureau, as of 11:00 a.m. today, a total of 36 pumping stations have been activated, discharging approximately 2.1 million tons of water. No flooding occurred in several historically flood-prone areas within the city, including Anping Road in Anping District and Zhongzheng Road in Rende District.
The Water Resources Bureau reported that from yesterday to 11:00 a.m. today, the highest cumulative rainfall was recorded in Xigang District at 169 millimeters, followed by Madou District with 163 millimeters and Beimen District with 157.5 millimeters. The highest three-hour rainfall was 92 millimeters in Dongshan District and 91.5 millimeters in Liuqia District. The highest one-hour rainfall reached 49 millimeters in Liuqia District and 47 millimeters in Dongshan District.
Due to the coinciding spring tide, sluice gates along the canal have been closed, and mobile pumps have been deployed. The bureau has monitored key flood-prone locations across the city, all of which remained free of flooding.
The bureau emphasized its comprehensive watershed-based flood management strategy in response to extreme rainfall patterns, including expanding bottleneck sections of drainage channels, enhancing dredging operations, upgrading pumping capacity, and implementing detention pond systems to reduce flood peaks. This year, the bureau has completed the replacement of aging pumping units at stations in Nanying District (Nanxing and Xinglong Temple), and in Jiangjun District (Mashagou and Qingkunshen).
These upgrades have significantly reduced the area affected by flooding and accelerated drainage times in recent years. According to forecasts from the Central Weather Administration, Tainan still faces the risk of heavy and short-duration torrential rains today. With spring tides lasting until the 19th, coastal and low-lying areas must remain vigilant against potential flooding. The city government will continue monitoring water levels and maintaining emergency preparedness.
