AI Net Zero Special Report (300 articles)

Digital transformation is now underway across industries, and artificial intelligence and carbon neutrality are two major challenges facing governments and enterprises, crucial to Taiwan's future competitiveness. CNA's frontline reporting team provides in-depth coverage of how the government and various industries are using AI to optimize production processes and drive green innovation, witnessing Taiwan's industries leap forward once again.

(CNA reporter Tseng Yun-ting, Taipei, June 14) The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced today that Taiwan's offshore wind power development has reached a new milestone. On the 12th, the domestic offshore wind farms completed the installation of the 500th wind turbine, bringing the cumulative total installed capacity to 4.8GW. Last year, offshore wind power generation exceeded 10 billion kWh for the first time.

The Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs, stated in a press release that according to the latest report from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Taiwan ranked 3rd globally in new offshore wind capacity in 2025 and 5th in total installed capacity, indicating that Taiwan has become one of the key offshore wind markets worldwide.

The Bureau of Energy noted that since completing the first two demonstration wind turbines in 2017, Taiwan has cumulatively installed 500 offshore wind turbines. Compared to some European countries with 20 to 30 years of offshore wind development history, achieving 500 turbines and 4.8GW of capacity within a decade is a remarkable accomplishment.

The Bureau pointed out that Taiwan's offshore wind development faced challenges such as the pandemic, global inflation, and changing international situations, which impacted offshore wind projects globally. However, through collaboration between the government and private sector, construction continued to advance, achieving these results.

The offshore wind turbines in Taiwan's waters have also withstood multiple typhoons and earthquakes. All units are currently operating stably, continuously providing green electricity. Last year, offshore wind power generation exceeded 10 billion kWh for the first time.

The completion of the 500th turbine is the result of joint efforts by all personnel involved in offshore wind development, developers, supply chain companies, financial institutions, and civil groups. The Bureau also expressed gratitude to relevant ministries for assisting in overcoming various difficulties encountered during the installation process.

Emphasizing the global trend toward net-zero carbon emissions, the Bureau stated it will continue collaborating with all sectors to promote offshore wind construction, expand stable green power supply, enhance energy resilience and industrial competitiveness, and advance toward the 2050 net-zero emissions goal.
