(Central News Agency reporter Lin Xingjian, Manila, June 14) The US government is considering relaxing import restrictions on fresh pineapple fruit from the Philippines. Once phytosanitary conditions for pests and diseases are met, Philippine exports to the US could expand from less than 600 metric tons annually at present to 19,200 metric tons—an increase of over 30 times.

According to recent reports by the Philippine print media 'Manila Bulletin,' the US Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has proposed expanding market access for fresh Philippine pineapples into the United States and allowing entry through all US ports.

Currently, the US only permits fresh Philippine pineapples to enter through specific ports in the US North Atlantic region, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. This restriction stems from long-standing US concerns that the oriental fruit fly could enter the country via imported fruit.

Based on the latest US risk assessment, Philippine pineapples exported to the US must meet phytosanitary requirements. The Smooth Cayenne variety, not considered a host for the oriental fruit fly, is recommended for direct import. Other varieties must undergo phytosanitary procedures such as steam heat treatment before entry.

APHIS is currently soliciting comments from stakeholders on this proposal, with the comment period ending on August 10. A final decision will be made following the review of feedback.

If the new measures are formally implemented, annual Philippine fresh pineapple exports to the US are estimated to reach 19,200 metric tons—far exceeding the average of less than 600 metric tons per year over the past five years up to 2024.

According to data released in February by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Philippines has maintained its position as the world’s second-largest pineapple exporter for the third consecutive year as of 2025, trailing only Costa Rica, and is the largest pineapple exporter in Asia.
