The New York Knicks have claimed their first NBA championship in 53 years. Jalen Brunson erupted for 45 points, including 13 consecutive points in the 4th quarter, leading the Knicks to a 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
According to the Associated Press, the Knicks won the series 4-1, with all four victories coming after double-digit deficits. They trailed by as many as 16 points in tonight’s game, but Brunson and the Knicks never lost composure.
Brunson closed the game with a spectacular performance, earning the Finals MVP award. He set a new Knicks franchise record for most points in an NBA Finals game, surpassing Willis Reed’s 38-point mark from Game 3 of the 1970 series against the Los Angeles Lakers. This record now belongs to the left-handed point guard who joined the team four years ago and completely transformed its destiny.
Mikal Bridges scored 14 points, Josh Hart added 13, combining for 27 points. They are the other two members of the 'Nova Knicks' trio, all of whom won an NCAA men’s basketball championship at Villanova University and have now reunited to achieve the same success with the Knicks.
For the Spurs, Dylan Harper led with 25 points, while Victor Wembanyama recorded 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
The Knicks improved to 4-0 in closeout games this season, all on the road. Yet the atmosphere didn’t feel like an away game, as thousands of New York fans traveled to Texas to witness this historic moment after a 53-year wait.
