(CNA, Geneva, 14th - International News Compilation) Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Geneva, Switzerland today to protest against the Group of Seven (G7) summit, with local authorities on high alert. The summit will be held in Évian, near the French border.

According to AFP, the demonstration was organized by the 'No-G7 Coalition,' a group comprising over 60 civil society organizations, trade unions, and leftist groups, aiming to denounce 'fascism and imperialism.' The protest took place on the eve of the G7 leaders' three-day annual meeting.

Tensions are high in Geneva, located about 40 kilometers from Évian. Authorities fear a repeat of the 2003 anti-G7 riots, during which protesters caused millions of dollars in damages across the city.

Geneva still vividly remembers the violence, looting, and clashes with police from that time. Even shops, supermarkets, theaters, and university buildings not located along the protest route have boarded up their windows as a precaution.

Several city events have been canceled due to the demonstration, and major hospitals have set up tents to handle a potential influx of injured people.

Swiss authorities have permitted the demonstrators to march along a northern route in Geneva, avoiding the city center and upscale commercial districts, and have deployed a large number of police and security equipment to maintain order.

Additionally, due to French regulations, the 'No-G7 Coalition' has canceled its originally planned demonstration in the French border town of Annemasse. (Translation: Shih Shih) 1150614
