(Taipei, April 14, CNA reporter Hsieh Ching-wen) Detroit Tigers' Taiwanese infielder Li Hao-Yu returned to Major League Baseball (MLB) today, making an immediate impact in his first game back. He recorded a hit in his first at-bat and finished 1-for-2 at the plate. Meanwhile, Cleveland Guardians' Stuart Fairchild, known as 'Fei Zai,' also started the game and delivered two hits, helping the Guardians secure a 3-1 win.
Li was demoted to Triple-A on April 4 (Taiwan time) but has now returned to the majors. In today's game against the Guardians, he started as the ninth hitter and played third base. On the opposing side, Taiwanese-American outfielder Stuart Fairchild started as the seventh hitter and played center field.
In the top of the 2nd inning, with two outs, Li hit a single to left field, but his teammates failed to extend the rally. In the bottom of the 2nd, Fairchild reached base via a hit-by-pitch, stole second, and the Guardians tied the game 1-1. Austin Hedges then hit a ground ball toward third base. Li fielded it and threw to home plate, tagging out Fairchild just before he touched home, preventing a run.
Li grounded out to shortstop in the 4th inning and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the 7th. He finished the game 1-for-2, with his batting average now at .212. Fairchild recorded an infield single off the pitcher in the 4th and followed up with a hit to center field in the 6th, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base, raising his average to .250.
The game was tied 1-1 after two innings. The Guardians took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Daniel Schneemann hit a two-run homer. They held on to win 3-1. Starting pitcher Joey Cantillo earned the win, pitching 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run. (Edited by Li Shu-hua) 1150614
