(Central News Agency, Geneva, 14th - International Reports) Protesters set fire to a Tesla car and smashed the windows of a United Nations agency in Geneva, Switzerland today, venting their anger over the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit on the French border. Police responded by firing tear gas.
According to Reuters, about 20,000 people joined what began as a peaceful march. Protesters later targeted parked Tesla vehicles and UN offices, which they viewed as symbols of capitalism and multilateralism.
Witnesses reported that demonstrators pried bricks from the ground and threw them at police, while tear gas filled the sun-drenched streets of central Geneva, causing children to cry from the acrid fumes.
The G7 summit has long faced protests, with many criticizing capitalism, globalization, climate change, and wealth inequality.
Demonstrators said they were protesting the G7 as a symbol of excessive concentration of political and economic power. Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and advisor to U.S. President Trump, became the world’s first trillion-dollar billionaire last week.
Protester Pippa Saugy said: 'For me, this is just another gathering of the rich, once again highlighting how the rich get richer while the poor are left behind.'
The G7 summit will be held from the 15th to the 17th in Évian-les-Bains, on the shores of Lake Geneva, with leaders from France, the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, and the European Union in attendance.
Fearing a repeat of violence, shop owners in Geneva had already boarded up their windows and doors, while hundreds of riot police were deployed across the city. (Compiled by: Ho Hung-Ju) 1150615
