U.S.-Iran War Key News

(CNA, Islamabad, June 13 — International Wire Reports) The United States and Iran appear to be once again approaching an agreement to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Trump stated that the deal is 'expected to be signed tomorrow.'

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said today that the agreement aimed at ending the Middle East conflict is closer than ever and is expected to be finalized within 24 hours. Pakistan is preparing for electronic signing, followed by technical-level talks next week.

President Trump said the agreement is 'expected to be signed tomorrow,' and the Strait of Hormuz will open immediately. However, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that no signing will take place tomorrow, leaving open the possibility in the coming days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said yesterday that terms regarding Iran's nuclear program will be finalized within 60 days after the preliminary agreement is signed, with the option to extend the timeline subject to mutual agreement.

A senior U.S. government official, speaking to reporters under White House ground rules, said the emerging agreement will initiate the process of destroying or removing Tehran's highly enriched uranium.

The official said the 60 days following the signing will be used to resolve technical details of uranium removal. The official did not specify who the U.S. envisions carrying out the removal, believed to be buried beneath three nuclear facilities attacked by the U.S. last year.

The U.S. official added that the emerging agreement includes provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Araghchi said Iran hopes for an agreement allowing Tehran to 'charge service fees' when vessels pass through the strait. Iran introduced a toll system during the war, which the U.S. and other nations claim violates international law.

Three regional officials said the emerging agreement is expected to include phased lifting of sanctions on Iran and the release of frozen Iranian assets. The officials requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the negotiations.

They said a signing ceremony is expected in the coming days after approval by officials in Washington and Tehran.

Iran insists that any agreement must include a ceasefire in Lebanon, where Israel continues to fight Hezbollah militias supported by Iran.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned yesterday that Israel may still act independently against Iran and will not withdraw from occupied areas in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, nor from the occupied northern refugee camps in the West Bank. (Compiled by: Li Pei-Shan) 1150614
