(Central News Agency, New York, 13th – comprehensive foreign report) The festive atmosphere of the FIFA World Cup swept through New York today, yet it was completely overshadowed by the intense local enthusiasm for the New York Knicks' quest for the NBA championship, causing the soccer spectacle to fade in comparison.
According to AFP, the opening match of the 2026 World Cup between five-time champions Brazil and Morocco was eclipsed by the NBA Finals showdown between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
David Rodriguez, 36, watching the soccer broadcast at The Rutherford bar near the Knicks' home arena, Madison Square Garden, said: "I'm not a soccer fan, so of course my full attention is on the Knicks today. But the World Cup is really cool."
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of soccer fans flooded nearby Penn Station, boarding trains bound for MetLife Stadium to watch the Brazil vs. Morocco match.
Morten Vold, 37, wearing Brazil's iconic yellow-green jersey, headed to the station amid visible military and police presence. He praised authorities for their preparations to handle the massive influx of World Cup visitors.
Hailing from Bergen, Norway, Vold noted that New York's transit app even offered video guidance for route navigation. However, he found the $98 round-trip ticket price (approximately NT$3,100) "absolutely outrageous compared to regular fares."
Beyond the small pockets of Manhattan touched by World Cup fever, the entire city is immersed in the Knicks' orange-and-blue wave. A victory tonight in Texas would secure the Knicks their first championship in 53 years.
David McNamara, manager of The Rutherford, said, "Once the Knicks game ends, people will shift their attention back to soccer." He added that two World Cup matches would be broadcast later today.
Tens of thousands of Knicks fans are flooding the neighborhood, gathering to cheer for their team. The Knicks currently hold a 3-1 lead in the championship series. (Compiled by Chen Yu-Ting) 1150614
