This year marks the 7th anniversary of the outbreak of Hong Kong's Anti-Extradition Movement. The 'Apple Daily' Archive Special Exhibition, hosted by Chasing Light, will open in Taipei on June 19 at the XinFu町 Cultural Market. Originally scheduled for only three days, the exhibition has been extended to July 15 to allow more people to reflect on the historical journey of 'Apple Daily' and Hong Kong.
Titled 'Backing Up Apple, Documenting Hong Kong – The Apple Daily Archive Special Exhibition,' the event will run from June 19 to July 15 at the XinFu町 Cultural Market in Taipei.
According to Chasing Light's Facebook post, 'Apple Daily,' a newspaper with 26 years of history, abruptly ceased publication on June 24, 2021. Five years on, what Hongkongers have lost is not merely a newspaper, but an era of free speech and vibrant media diversity in Hong Kong.
Chasing Light emphasized that hosting this special exhibition on Taiwan's democratic and free soil is not about nostalgia, but about preserving history. The exhibition gathers 'Apple Daily's' coverage from its founding in 1995, documenting Hong Kong's transition from British colonial rule to sovereignty transfer, from the Umbrella Movement to the Anti-Extradition Bill Amendment Movement (Anti-ELAB), along with numerous historical artifacts—some of which will be unveiled for the first time.
The organizers hope that by objectively presenting this history, visitors can understand the significance of 'Apple Daily' to Hong Kong and carry forward the spirit of pursuing democracy and freedom.
Chasing Light also stated that these historical traces, carrying Hong Kong's collective memory, will not vanish after the exhibition ends. After the closing, some of the most valuable exhibits are planned to be donated to the Hong Kong Studies Program Database at Academia Sinica in Taiwan for permanent preservation, ensuring this history is securely archived and passed on to future generations within a free and safe academic environment.
The organizers view this exhibition as a starting point, with the aspiration to tour it globally in the future. This would allow the global Hong Kong diaspora to witness this history firsthand and ensure the international community continues to see the truth and pulse of Hong Kong.
