(Central News Agency reporter Wu Jui-chi, Taoyuan, June 14) — Influenced by the rising popularity of retro aesthetics, increasing numbers of people are turning their attention to pixel art. Taiwanese pixel artist KAI has launched an exhibition featuring nine themed zones and interactive experiences, styled after the 'classic four-color' window interface of vintage gaming consoles, inviting visitors to become protagonists exploring a pixelated world.

KAI, a pixel art creator, shared in a media interview that having been born in the 1990s, he developed a deep affection for pixel art due to his childhood games, all of which were crafted in the 'pixel art (Pixel Art)' style. Since first experimenting with Windows 98's Paint tool in third grade, he has been creating pixel art for over 20 years. This exhibition draws inspiration from the 'classic four-color' window style of retro gaming consoles, transforming digital windows into physical installations. It integrates street observations, insect and mineral collecting, creative escape rooms, and collaborative interactive zones to form nine distinct themed areas.

KAI emphasized that working with only four colors requires greater creative thinking. While modern games offer high-resolution graphics, their polished visuals often leave less room for imagination compared to pixel art, which preserves ample space for viewers to interpret freely. This exhibition incorporates many personal memories and daily inspirations, featuring six missions and four workshops. Visitors who complete challenges have a chance to win limited-edition merchandise, turning the art exhibition into an engaging, large-scale interactive game.

According to KAI, a 'pixel' is the fundamental unit that constitutes digital images and screen displays. Each pixel acts like a tiny colored block, carrying a single color. Millions of pixels arranged closely together form the clear photos and videos seen on smartphones and computers.

Titled 'Whose Game Room?', this special pixel art exhibition runs from June 14 to 28 on the 10th floor of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi’s Zhanchian Store in Taoyuan. The venue also hosts four artisan experience workshops, open for public registration. Chen Pi-chuan, store manager of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Taoyuan Zhanchian, noted that the event collaborates with four surrounding cultural and creative spaces to launch a 'Limited NPC Search Mission,' transforming the art exhibition into a large-scale immersive game. Visitors are invited to begin their journey from the exhibition space and explore the Taoyuan Zhanchian district map. (Edited by Li Shu-hua) 1150614
