Key News on Russia's Invasion of Ukraine
Central Message
(Central News Agency, London, 14th -综合 international wire reports) The UK Ministry of Defence announced today that its armed forces intercepted a Russian shadow fleet tanker attempting to cross the English Channel.
According to Reuters, a ministry statement said Royal Marines commandos and specially trained law enforcement officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) boarded the vessel named SMYRTOS.
The statement indicated that the ship would be detained off the southern coast of the UK for monitoring during the investigation.
It added that the law enforcement operation conducted within UK territorial waters was carried out in accordance with domestic and international law.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated he ordered the interception.
He posted on social media platform X: "This successful operation is another blow against Russia and a reminder to those who assist President Vladimir Putin in his war against Ukraine: we will not let you get away with it."
Russia is reported to have built a fleet of aging oil tankers with opaque ownership to circumvent sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United States, and the Group of Seven (G7) over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
According to experts and a briefing from the European Parliament, the shadow fleet hides vessel ownership, ensures ship management companies are based outside Russia, and flies flags of convenience—or even false flags.
Moreover, these vessels have been observed disabling their Automatic Identification System (AIS), becoming 'invisible' at sea to conduct ship-to-ship transfers of Russian oil.
Many of these vessels are already old and dilapidated, meaning their owners face limited losses if they are seized or lost due to oil spill accidents. (Translation: Yang Chaoyan) 1150614
