As graduation season arrives across schools in Taiwan, Huang Jinbiao, a driver for Taichung City's Yellow Minibus service, recently received a touching thank-you card from graduating students of Huangzhu Elementary School in Taiping District. The students expressed their gratitude for his daily, safe transportation to and from school, leaving Huang deeply moved. 'This thank-you card is the most precious award I've ever received!' he said.

The graduating students wrote in the card: 'Thank you, driver uncle, for safely taking us to and from school every day. We're so lucky to have you. We're graduating now! We also thank the Taichung City Government Transportation Bureau for helping us travel safely and smoothly. Wishing everyone safe journeys, good health, and happiness.'

The city's Transportation Bureau explained in a press release today that Taichung has established 26 Yellow Minibus routes, serving 68 elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. The service fills public transportation gaps in remote areas, becoming a trusted and convenient commuting partner for parents and students alike.

Transportation Bureau Director Ye Zhao-fu stated that the Yellow Minibus overcomes limitations in areas where regular buses cannot operate. Among riders, 54% are aged 55 or older, and 26% are under 20. By the end of 2025 (Year 114), the service has operated over 360,000 trips, transporting approximately 320,000 people, with a service satisfaction rate as high as 90%. By using taxis instead of traditional buses, the service offers flexibility and deep community access.

Huang Jinbiao, formerly a regular taxi driver, joined the Yellow Minibus fleet to serve students and rural residents. Over the years, he has built close relationships with passengers, turning from driver to friend. Safety is his top priority when transporting students. If a child misses a ride, he often checks whether they are absent or unwell. As the children move on to junior high, he feels both joy and sadness. He vows to continue serving with the Yellow Minibus, supporting Taichung City's transportation welfare policies.

The Huangzhu Elementary School Parent Association noted that due to the school's small size, it frequently organizes mountain hikes, railway tours, and environmental education programs to broaden students' horizons. This year, six of the 11 graduating students used the Yellow Minibus, including two sets of twins. The free service is more than just transportation—it carries the educational dreams and growing memories of rural children. (Edited by Chen Qingfang)
