(Central News Agency reporter Huang Chiao-wen, Taipei, June 13) In 2025, over 325,152 speeding violations were recorded on national highways, accounting for approximately 35% of all traffic enforcement cases. The Ministry of Transportation's Highway Bureau announced today that speeding can incur fines up to NT$36,000, and severe offenders may face immediate driving suspension or even license revocation, urging road users not to take risks.
Additionally, the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival holiday will span three days from June 19 to June 21. The Highway Bureau stated it plans to implement high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) restrictions, with time-based HOV rules expected on the northbound lanes of National Highway No. 5 during the latter two days of the holiday (June 20–21).
In a press release, the Highway Bureau emphasized that due to the high speeds on expressways, collisions often lead to vehicle loss of control, spinning, or rollovers. The faster a vehicle travels, the shorter the driver’s reaction time. In the event of an accident, the severity of injuries or fatalities is often significantly higher.
Statistics show that in 2025, a total of 325,152 speeding violations were recorded on national highways, accounting for about 35% of all highway violations.
The Highway Bureau noted that speeding on national highways will be penalized under Articles 33 and 43 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, with fines ranging from NT$3,000 to NT$36,000 depending on severity. In cases of severe speeding, drivers may be immediately prohibited from driving, have their vehicle license plates suspended for six months, or even face license revocation. The bureau reminds road users not to act recklessly or take chances.
The Highway Bureau urges all road users to strictly observe speed limits and maintain safe following distances when driving on expressways. This ensures sufficient time and space to stabilize vehicle control and avoid hazards in case of sudden situations. Drivers must adhere to speed limits, drive cautiously, avoid distractions, monitor前方 conditions, and maintain safe driving distances. (Edited by Huang Ming-hsi) 20250613
