Central News Agency Report
(Central News Agency reporter Tsai Chih-ming, Chiayi County, June 13) Democratic Progressive Party legislator Chen Kuan-ting stated today that recent years have seen frequent droughts in mountainous areas, negatively impacting tea growth and causing daily inconveniences for residents. He has coordinated with the Taiwan Water Corporation to widely establish reservoirs in water-sourced locations across the mountainous regions.
The Alishan Township Farmers' Association held its spring high-elevation premium tea competition awards ceremony, attended by Chiayi County Magistrate Weng Chang-liang and legislator Chen Kuan-ting.
Tea farmers reported that this year's drought has reduced tea yields. Chen told CNA reporters that last year he secured approval from Taiwan Water to build a 20,000 cubic meter raw water reservoir in Leye, Alishan, scheduled to break ground in July, which is expected to alleviate water shortages.
Chen emphasized that one reservoir alone is insufficient to solve water scarcity. He is currently surveying local needs and urging residents to help identify water sources for further evaluation and potential reservoir construction, aiming to comprehensively address recurring drought issues.
Additionally, Chen noted that while Alishan tea was once popular only in Asia, it has now gained popularity in Europe and is renowned worldwide. He regularly brings Alishan tea and coffee as gifts during diplomatic events in the Legislative Yuan’s Foreign and National Defense Committee and overseas visits, which European friends receive with great delight.
Chiu Chui-feng, Deputy Director of the Tea and Beverage Crops Improvement Section at the Council of Agriculture, stated that this year’s Alishan tea awarded premium or higher ratings exhibits excellent quality, making it worthy of purchase and tasting. (Edited by Li Ming-tsung) 1150613
