Central News Agency, Penghu County, June 13
The question of whether Wu Shu-chin, wife of Penghu County Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu, will 'run in his place' has drawn significant attention. Wu stated today, 'Everything is ready,' as she awaits the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) formal nomination on the 17th. Chen remains hospitalized due to severe brain trauma.
Wu made the remarks today while visiting Xiwai and Xiwen Villages in Magong City with the Guangfu Free Haircut Team, during a media interview.
Wu said the DPP Central Committee has confirmed it will nominate her on June 17 at its Central Standing Committee meeting to represent Chen in the magistrate race. Relevant documents have already been submitted to the party headquarters and communicated to Chen, who is still in hospital. 'I saw his eyes move, as if he felt relieved,' she said. She will travel north on the 17th to receive the campaign sash from President Lai Ching-te, who also serves as DPP chairperson, officially launching her campaign.
Wu stated that she is fully prepared to run for Penghu County Magistrate on behalf of her husband, saying, 'Everything is ready.' She hopes to move forward with the people, safeguard democracy and Penghu, and continue Chen's policy vision.
She also revealed that Chen has been hospitalized for four months due to severe brain injury, with slow progress in treatment and rehabilitation. The family has made appropriate arrangements for his ongoing care and recovery.
The upcoming Penghu County magistrate election at year-end already has six declared candidates. Besides Wu, they include Huxi Township Mayor Chen Chen-chung of the Kuomintang, former Magong Mayor Yeh Chu-lin, former Deputy Magistrate Hsu Chih-fu, marine volunteer Chen Chin-chuan, and Taiwan Solidarity Union Chairperson Chow Ni-an. This is the highest number of candidates in history, making the race unprecedentedly competitive. (Edited by Chang Ming-kun and Huang Ming-hsi) 1150613
