The 18th Cross-Strait Forum opened today in Xiamen, where Wang Huning, Chairman of China's National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, met with Kuomintang (KMT) Vice Chairman Chang Jung-kung and KMT legislator Chen Yu-chen from Kinmen. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) of Taiwan stated that Wang reiterated outdated positions such as the 'One-China Principle' and the '1992 Consensus,' and expressed deep regret over Taiwan's opposition figures echoing distorted narratives from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
In a press release today, the MAC noted that during Wang Huning's meeting with Taiwan's opposition representatives and his keynote speech at the forum, he repeated long-standing assertions including the 'One-China Principle' and '1992 Consensus,' and once again blamed Taiwan for the current stalemate in cross-strait relations.
The MAC emphasized that the fundamental reason for the breakdown in cross-strait communication mechanisms is Beijing's refusal to acknowledge the objective reality of the Republic of China's existence, its imposition of political preconditions for dialogue, and its failure to pragmatically address mainstream public opinion in Taiwan. The Council expressed profound regret over opposition figures in Taiwan echoing the CCP's distorted narratives.
The MAC pointed out that certain political and governmental figures in Taiwan have led delegations to China and endorsed Beijing's narratives on 'national rejuvenation' and the so-called 'breakdown of cross-strait ties.' Such actions, it warned, do not contribute to improving cross-strait relations but instead deepen societal divisions and weaken Taiwan's democratic resilience. Moreover, they send a false message to the international community that Taiwan voluntarily accepts Beijing's political preconditions.
The MAC urged all parties engaging in exchanges with China to comply with relevant laws and regulations, avoid becoming tools for Beijing's united front propaganda, and jointly safeguard Taiwan's sovereignty and dignity. (Edited by Chou Hui-ying)
