(CNA reporter Li Chien-Chung, Taipei, June 13) Taiwan's compound archery mixed pair, Chang Cheng-Wei and Huang Yi-Jou, clinched the gold medal at the Antalya Archery World Cup final today, defeating Denmark 158-157. Chang achieved a perfect score of 10 points on all 8 of his arrows in the final, with coach Lin Che-Wei stating that recent technical adjustments had proven effective.
Held in Turkey, the Antalya Archery World Cup saw Taiwan's archery team not only secure the compound mixed team gold today, but also win a bronze medal earlier in the men's recurve team event.
In the compound mixed event, Chang and Huang ranked 17th in qualification with a total score of 1,391. However, they advanced steadily through the elimination rounds, defeating top-seeded Great Britain 160-156 in the round of 16.
The compound archery match format differs from recurve. In compound head-to-head matches, each archer shoots two arrows per round, and the team with the higher total score after four rounds wins.
At the end of the first two rounds of today's gold medal match, Taiwan was tied 79-79 with the Danish pair Mathias Fullerton and Tanja Gellenthien.
In the third round, one of Huang Yi-Jou's arrows scored 9 points, putting Taiwan behind 138-139. In the decisive final round, Chang and Huang demonstrated remarkable composure, combining for a perfect 40 points, while Denmark managed only 38, allowing Taiwan to reverse the score and win 158-157.
Men's compound archery coach Lin Che-Wei told CNA, 'Cheng-Wei performed exceptionally well—scoring 10 points on all 8 of his final arrows shows his extraordinary mental resilience.'
Lin revealed that minor technical adjustments were made to Chang's form before departure, and they clearly paid off in this match. 'He and senior teammate Yi-Jou worked very well together—both were extremely consistent.'
Women's compound coach Chen Neng-Sheng noted that despite trailing by one point after three rounds, neither athlete gave up. 'They reminded each other of key points, which led to this comeback victory. Their average arrow scores were also clearly superior to their opponents.'
Huang Yi-Jou, a dominant force in women's compound archery, previously won gold at the 2022 Archery World Cup in Gwangju with teammate Chen Chieh-Lun. Now, four years later, she stands atop the podium again, this time with Chang Cheng-Wei.
World Archery announced in April last year that the compound mixed team event will debut as an official Olympic discipline at the 2028 Los Angeles Games—the first time compound archery will be included in Olympic history—giving Taiwan a new competitive advantage in medal contention.
