Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taibao City mayoral candidate Lü Hui-Yu held a living room meeting today at the Taibao City Dongshi Activity Center. Her opponent, incumbent Taibao Mayor Cheng Shu-Fen, suddenly appeared and criticized the venue rental for being inconsistent with the stated purpose, leading to a verbal confrontation with DPP legislator Tsai I-Yu.
Lü Hui-Yu’s first living room meeting was held in the afternoon at the Dongshi Community Activity Center. Tsai I-Yu, Chiayi County Magistrate Weng Chang-Liang, former Magistrate Chen Ming-Wen, and DPP Chiayi County Party Chair He Jia-Heng all attended in support. However, just before the event began, Cheng Shu-Fen’s sudden arrival shocked Tsai and others, prompting Tsai to angrily accuse Cheng of disrupting the gathering.
Cheng stated that the DPP Chiayi County Party had requested the venue through a local village chief under the pretext of a county policy briefing, but instead used it for a campaign rally. She urged future applicants to state the actual purpose rather than misusing administrative justifications. She added that farmers had come to inquire about greenhouse compensation, only to find a political event, and left disappointed.
Tsai responded that holding explanatory meetings during democratic elections is normal, and expressed surprise at the incident. He criticized Cheng’s lack of grace, saying her group’s intimidating presence caused him to lose composure and speak loudly.
Weng Chang-Liang said he anticipated Cheng’s possible appearance during the morning Alishan tea awards event and had already asked He Jia-Heng to communicate with her. He thought the matter was settled, but the incident still occurred.
He Jia-Heng noted that if the city office had concerns about venue applications or event content, they should have communicated and coordinated beforehand or followed proper procedures, rather than showing up mid-event to demand removal of materials, causing public disturbance.
Lü Hui-Yu told CNA reporters she had planned to present her policy platform to locals, and while she wouldn’t deny being affected emotionally by the disruption, the crowd’s continuous support strengthened her resolve. She thanked many Dongshi residents who stayed to hear her vision and plans for Taibao’s future.
She emphasized that Taibao will be Chiayi County’s most important international new urban district. As a mayoral candidate, she understands the need to center on citizens’ needs and will continue pursuing public endorsement through rational dialogue and practical action.
