(CNA reporter Liu Chien-Pang, Taipei, June 13) Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang attended the opening ceremony of the Beyblade Championship today and, during a press interview, presented his vision for revitalizing commercial districts. He proposed planning cluster-based and comprehensive development subsidies for business zones, such as integrating events with local commerce.
An enthusiast of Beyblades, Shen attended the 'Beyblade Championship Opening Ceremony' held in the Taipei Main Station rear district, accompanied by several DPP Taipei city councilors. Before the event, he made the above remarks during a joint media interview.
When asked why he participated in this event beyond his personal interest in Beyblades and how it could revitalize the commercial district, Shen first mentioned specialty Beyblade shops within the district and detailed the functions of various Beyblade models.
Shen continued by noting that the rear district has always been a hub of foot traffic and has developed alongside the history of Taipei Main Station, functioning much like a community center. The area hosts stores selling leather goods, hats, gift wrapping, toys, and more. He shared that he often purchases luggage from shops in the district and expressed hope that events like this could bring consumers together.
When discussing urban planning, Shen stated that industrial development should be supported through subsidies. He pointed out that past subsidies often targeted individual businesses, whereas central government subsidies typically adopt a cluster-based approach.
Shen emphasized that the Taipei City Government should also introduce cluster-based, holistic development subsidy policies to better support commercial districts. He noted that many incumbent and candidate city councilors from his party attended today’s event, and stressed that his municipal vision must be implemented with the support of councilors to truly improve Taipei.
Asked about Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an’s proposal to abolish the Control Yuan, Shen criticized the use of such political rhetoric while neglecting municipal affairs, stating this is not what citizens want to see. He added that since announcing his candidacy, he has consistently raised issues reported by citizens and urged Chiang to personally respond to municipal topics and engage in public debate.
