The Indian military announced in a statement that a military transport aircraft crashed during landing at a remote airbase in northeastern India.
According to Agence France-Presse, the Soviet-made Antonov An-32 transport plane crashed while landing in Jorhat, Assam. The statement did not disclose the number of people on board or details about injuries or fatalities.
The military statement said, "A committee of inquiry has been formed to determine the cause of the accident."
NDTV broadcast footage from the crash site showing thick smoke rising and aircraft debris scattered across the area.
The An-32 is a twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft specifically designed to operate in high-altitude and extreme climate conditions.
The Indian Air Force operates approximately 100 An-32 aircraft, used for military logistics and humanitarian aid missions in the country's most remote mountainous regions.
The last major accident involving this aircraft model occurred in 2019 in Arunachal Pradesh near the Chinese border, resulting in 13 fatalities.
