2026 FIFA World Cup Key News

(Central News Agency, Toronto, December 12 — Compiled international news) Canada national soccer team head coach Jesse Marsch said he was satisfied with his team's 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina (hereinafter 'Bosnia') in today's Group B World Cup match, though he noted the team lacked aggressiveness in the first half.

According to Reuters, Bosnia's Jovo Lukic opened the scoring in the 21st minute, but the goal did not deter Canada. The team maintained pressure in the second half and equalized in the 78th minute through substitute forward Cyle Larin. This draw secured Canada's first point in the tournament.

"After the game, I told the players that if we can maintain this kind of performance in the second half — or throughout the entire match — we can win," Marsch said.

"We must learn from these lessons, and quickly," he added. "We still control our destiny, and that is crucial for us."

The opening goal for host nation Canada, scored by 31-year-old Cyle Larin, carried symbolic significance. Larin is second on the all-time national team scoring list, behind only Jonathan David.

"(Larin) was unhappy about not starting," Marsch said of the forward, who has scored eight goals this season for Southampton in the English Championship.

"But I told him, 'Listen, you've had an outstanding year at Southampton. Whether you start or come off the bench, you impact every game. You need to accept that now.' And he did."

Marsch said his team increased the tempo in the second half and launched more threatening attacks to equalize.

"We saw that (Bosnia) was tiring," he explained, noting that Canada's youth, fitness, and speed could wear down the opposition. "So I told them, now we have the upper hand."

"It's time to go all out and push for a goal."

Canada conceded first but later gained a slight edge in possession. Still, Marsch expressed dissatisfaction with his team's first-half performance.

"I felt we were too cautious," Marsch said. "We weren't aggressive or proactive enough."

With home crowd support, Canada maintained an attacking rhythm and created multiple chances until substitute Larin finally leveled the score. Canada had 13 shots in total, with 4 on target.

Marsch acknowledged that the second-half substitutions made a difference, but he hopes the team can display the same level of performance from the start in their next match against Qatar on the 18th.

"I need to figure out how to get some of our starting players to perform better and ensure we deliver a stronger performance right from the beginning," Marsch said. (Translation: Chi Hsiang-Ping) 1150613
