2026 FIFA World Cup Key News
Central News Agency Report from Inglewood, California, December 12 — The United States triumphed over Paraguay 4-1 in today’s FIFA World Cup match, securing a strong opening victory. After the game, U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino told the media that the win was the result of team collaboration, not individual brilliance.
According to Reuters, this marks the first time the U.S. has scored four goals in a single World Cup match. Forward Folarin Balogun scored two of those goals, becoming the first American player since the tournament’s inception in 1930 to record a brace in World Cup history.
Despite standout performances from players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, Pochettino emphasized the contributions of the entire squad and support staff.
"This was a team effort," he said, adding that the players were inspired by passionate fan support. "It was incredible. They were amazing. If our fans continue to support us like this, we can achieve extraordinary performances."
Pochettino also cautioned that while the team is celebrating, this is only the beginning.
