Controversy has erupted over Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-chun's visit to the United States after reports surfaced that she took photos with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) united front officials during an overseas Chinese banquet.
Cheng attended a banquet during her US trip where CCP united front officials were present, drawing public scrutiny. Additionally, during a panel discussion at the New York-based think tank 'Asia Society,' an overseas Chinese individual questioned Cheng about 'embracing the Communist Party,' leading to the individual being removed from the venue. Outside the venue, suspected members of a Chinese gang allegedly issued threats.
Liang Wen-chieh, Vice Chairperson and Spokesperson of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), said at a regular press conference today: 'I must admit, this is indeed a rather concerning phenomenon.' He pointed out that from cadres of the Chinese Association for Promoting Peaceful Reunification to 'mainland Chinese gangs in the US,' such figures have frequently appeared at these events—including Cheng's dinner, other visits, and forums—indicating a serious issue.
Liang stated, 'You can clearly see that CCP influence has infiltrated our overseas Chinese communities in the US.' Traditionally, while Taiwan's overseas Chinese communities have included 'old' and 'new' immigrants, they have generally supported the Republic of China. However, judging from recent signs, CCP influence may have already penetrated these communities and now holds considerable sway.
Liang emphasized, 'The shadow of behind-the-scenes interference is clearly visible to everyone.' The MAC will classify this phenomenon as a 'significant warning sign.' (Editor: Yang Sheng-ju)
