(Taipei, April 11, CNA by reporter Yang Yao-ju) The 11th EU-Korea Summit was held in Belgium, where leaders issued a joint statement underscoring the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomed the outcome today, stating that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are crucial for regional security and prosperity, as well as for the stability of global supply chains and the normal functioning of international trade and economic activities.
According to a press release from the European Commission, European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung convened the '11th EU-Korea Summit' on April 10 in Brussels, Belgium. In their post-summit joint statement, they reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the Indo-Pacific region. They also emphasized support for freedom of navigation and overflight, as protected under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), including in the South China Sea.
In an evening press release, Taiwan's MOFA expressed approval, noting that this marks the second consecutive year—following the 10th EU-Korea Summit in 2023—that the EU and South Korea have jointly emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. MOFA welcomed and affirmed this consistent stance.
MOFA highlighted that Taiwan occupies a key position in the first island chain of the Indo-Pacific. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are not only vital for regional security and prosperity but also serve as a foundational element for the stability of global supply chains and the normal operation of international trade. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with like-minded partners to jointly safeguard peace and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region, and to uphold a rules-based international order.
