(CNA reporter Yeh Chen, Taoyuan, 12th) A drug suspect fleeing police pursuit in a car last night in Taoyuan City struck and killed two pedestrians near Min-Sheng General Hospital in Taoyuan District. Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng stated that the suspect, allegedly driving under the influence, will be held fully accountable, and has instructed all relevant units to fully assist the families and thoroughly investigate the source of the drugs.
In a Facebook post, Chang San-cheng expressed his deep sorrow over the incident where the suspect, fleeing police investigation, crashed at high speed, leading to the unfortunate deaths of two innocent citizens. He extended his deepest condolences to the families.
Chang stated that according to preliminary police investigations, drugs were found in the suspect's car, indicating alleged drugged driving and reckless evasion. He has instructed the Social Affairs Bureau, Health Bureau, and Police Department to provide all necessary assistance to the families in handling subsequent matters and to support them through this most difficult time.
Chang also expressed the strongest condemnation for the perpetrator, and has demanded the Police Department to fully cooperate with the prosecutorial investigation, trace the origins, and thoroughly investigate the source of the drugs and the supply chain behind it, vowing not to allow drugs to continue to harm society.
