President Trump announced today that he will nominate Jay Clayton, former Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and current U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, to serve as Director of National Intelligence. This nomination comes after congressional backlash against Trump’s earlier choice for an interim appointment.
Trump posted on his social media platform 'Truth Social': 'In the entire legal community, few are as highly respected as Jay. I urge the U.S. Senate to confirm his nomination as quickly as possible.'
According to Clayton’s official biography, he previously served as Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and is currently the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. During his tenure as prosecutor, he led several high-profile cases, including the indictment of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on charges of 'narcoterrorism.'
However, Clayton lacks experience in intelligence operations and has no traditional background in national security.
It remains unclear whether Clayton’s nomination will ease Democratic opposition to Trump’s other controversial appointments.
Trump had initially intended to appoint Bill Pulte, a loyal ally and Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), as the interim Director of National Intelligence—a move that sparked controversy and contributed to a congressional stalemate over the reauthorization of a foreign surveillance program set to expire tomorrow.
Today, the Republican-majority House of Representatives rejected a proposal to temporarily extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a bill that Trump had previously supported. (Compiled by: Hsu Jui-cheng) 1150612
