On the 11th, the men's recurve team event at the Archery World Cup in Antalya concluded with Taiwan's national team securing a bronze medal. The trio of Tang Chih-chun, Cheng Hsiang-hui, and Lin Tzu-hsiang defeated Mexico 5-1 in the bronze medal match. Coach Kuo Chen-wei commented, "Our team synergy is finally showing results."
The Chinese Taipei Archery Association selected Tang, Cheng, and Lin to represent Taiwan in the men's recurve archery event at the upcoming September Asian Games in Nagoya, based on their performances from the end of last year through the first two World Cup events this year.
Today's bronze medal marks a strong start ahead of the Asian Games.
After the qualification round, Taiwan ranked 6th with a total score of 2,012 points, earning a bye in the first round. They advanced by defeating Japan 6-0 in the Round of 16 and France 5-3 in the quarterfinals, but lost 2-6 to the United States in the semifinals.
Despite missing the gold medal match, the team delivered an outstanding performance in the bronze medal contest. The first set ended in a 57-all tie, but Taiwan won the second set 56-54 and the third 55-52, ultimately winning 5-1 to secure the medal.
Kuo Chen-wei, head coach for the Asian Games men's recurve team, told Central News Agency that the team struggled with wind judgment in earlier matches but made timely corrections in this crucial game. He added that the athletes maintained a relaxed mindset, contributing to their success.
Kuo noted that the shooting order—Tang Chih-chun, Lin Tzu-hsiang, and Cheng Hsiang-hui—worked well, with all three archers performing consistently. After two World Cup events this year, he observed, "They've developed better synergy and consensus on aiming points, and they actively remind each other of key details during competition."
Kuo humorously described the team as representing the 'old, middle, and young' generations. Although Tang, at 25, is already considered the team's elder statesman due to his extensive international experience, the youngest member, Cheng, who is about to enter his senior year in college, showed remarkable composure and potential.
He emphasized that with the Asian Games roster now finalized, the team feels more confident. Combined with effective coordination among coaching staff, he believes the team is progressing in the right direction, steadily preparing for the Nagoya Asian Games.
