The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off today, with France's national football team unveiling a mint green away jersey—a bold departure from tradition—inspired by the Statue of Liberty. Initially met with criticism, the new kit has gained widespread popularity and is now sold out across all categories—men's, women's, and children's—on the official website.
The French Football Federation and sportswear giant Nike revealed the new home and away kits in March. The mint green away jersey, named 'Liberté' (Liberty), faced backlash at launch but has since become a commercial success.
The standard version retails for €110 (approximately NT$4,013), while the performance fabric version is priced at €160.
David Bellion, a former footballer and sports fashion consultant, told Le Figaro: 'This jersey is perfect—it exudes a summer and refreshing vibe.'
Traditionally, France's home kit is dark blue and the away kit white. Months ago, football writer Matthieu Delahais criticized the new design in an interview with Le Point, calling it 'blasphemous.'
Nike stated the mint green hue draws direct inspiration from the patina of the Statue of Liberty in New York City—a renowned monument gifted by France to the United States.
Bellion noted the jersey's popularity reflects how the World Cup is no longer just about national pride but also deeply intertwined with fashion. 'Brands are taking kit launches more seriously than ever, recognizing that wearing football jerseys has become part of pop culture,' he said.
Nike has not released sales figures but confirmed restocks are coming soon.
The 2026 World Cup is co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. For the first time, the tournament has expanded to 48 teams, increasing the number of matches from 64 to 104, and will run until July 19.
