(Belfast, 9th June, via wire services) An anti-immigrant violent incident was sparked by a stabbing attack in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After police charged a Sudanese man, masked protesters set fire to homes and vehicles in multiple locations and clashed with police, forcing some residents to flee their homes.

According to Reuters, a video that had previously gone viral online showed a man allegedly carrying out a knife attack in north Belfast, leading to heightened social tension.

Police stated that the victim, a man in his 40s, suffered severe eye trauma and was also cut on his face and back in the attack. The 30-year-old Sudanese man suspected of the crime is currently in custody for attempted murder.

Hundreds of protesters clashed with police and set vehicles on fire across Northern Ireland tonight. Footage aired by the BBC showed police assisting a family to evacuate from a burning house.

Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill stated in a statement: "There is no excuse and no justification for the violence tonight. It is a disgusting act of cowardice for a group of masked men to set fire to homes, forcing residents to flee."

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer slammed the stabbing attack in north Belfast as "disgusting." Authorities are not currently investigating the incident as a terrorist attack.

Prior to this, multiple anti-immigrant protests and riots have erupted across the UK, with populist parties accusing the UK's asylum policy of allowing dangerous individuals to enter the country. A sexual assault case in Northern Ireland last year also triggered anti-immigrant riots.

Leaders of Northern Ireland's main political parties have jointly condemned this attack and called for calm, stressing that violent attacks will only further harm society.
