(Central News Agency, reporter Xu Zhiwei, Taipei, 8th) A research team at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has developed a 'Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Device.' Like a magic mirror, it can instantly determine the relative positions of the signal source and the user, precisely reflecting and directing signals that would otherwise be scattered or blocked to mobile phones or devices, ensuring seamless connectivity.

In a press release on the 8th, NYCU noted that in an era where everyone carries a mobile phone, stable and efficient communication is a basic need. When turning a corner or entering a room, poor network reception is often not due to a slow network, but because signals are blocked by walls and buildings.

Associate Professor Yu Jun-Hong from the NYCU Institute of Communication Engineering led a team to develop the 'Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Device' using patented technology. The device can precisely bounce signals back to mobile phones, effectively reducing signal latency and interference, maintaining stable connection quality in complex environments, and significantly improving communication quality when many users connect simultaneously, such as in crowded train stations, concerts, or large events.

Professor Yu explained that the device can be imagined as a magic mirror. It instantly determines the relative positions of the signal source and the user, precisely reflecting and directing scattered or blocked signals to phones or devices. This magic mirror prevents signals from disappearing when hitting a wall; instead, it turns the wall into a teammate that passes the ball, making the network fast and stable.

This technology can also be integrated with satellite communication systems. Through intelligent reflection, it can precisely transmit satellite signals to ground users, effectively improving signal coverage issues in remote areas and disaster response scenarios. This enhances the reliability and immediacy of communication services, allowing rural areas to enjoy smoother network services, which is significant for applications like emergency rescue, telemedicine, and rural education.
