(Central News Agency, reporters Jiang Ming-Yan and Yu Xiao-Han, Taipei, June 8) The International Air Transport Association (IATA) resolved at its 82nd Annual General Meeting to elect EVA Air President Sun Chia-Ming as a member of the IATA Board of Directors (BoD). EVA Air also becomes the first and only Taiwanese airline to participate in IATA Board affairs.
IATA held its 82nd Annual General Meeting in Brazil on June 7, during which the resolution to elect EVA Air President Sun Chia-Ming to the IATA Board of Directors was passed.
The IATA Board of Directors is the highest core decision-making leadership body within the organization, responsible for overseeing IATA's strategic direction and governance, and approving major policies and governance frameworks. The Board comprises four main committees: the Governance and Performance Committee, the Industry Strategy and Policy Committee, the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee, and the Membership Committee.
EVA Air stated that President Sun Chia-Ming's election to the IATA Board of Directors is a landmark event in the aviation industry, demonstrating that EVA Air's deep involvement in international civil aviation affairs is recognized by global industry players, and reflecting EVA Air's standing in the international civil aviation industry.
Sun Chia-Ming stated that representing EVA Air as the first Taiwanese member to join the IATA Board is not only a starting point for EVA Air to enter the core of international organizations but also a meaningful milestone for Taiwan's civil aviation.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh welcomed Sun Chia-Ming to the IATA Board of Directors, expressing anticipation that his experience in both passenger and cargo sectors will help shape IATA's strategic direction and aviation industry development priorities, while continuing to oversee IATA's operational affairs.
EVA Air explained that IATA is a non-governmental international organization composed of airlines from around the world. Since its establishment in 1945, it has become the most influential institution in the aviation industry. Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, with an executive office in Geneva, Switzerland, IATA has over 360 member airlines worldwide, accounting for more than 80% of global air traffic.
IATA is the core of the global aviation industry system, playing a key role in connecting global air networks and ensuring operational standardization, such as managing global airport codes and airline codes. Through IATA's Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) and New Distribution Capability (NDC) technical standards, airlines can reduce administrative barriers in complex cross-border operations and seamlessly integrate with international markets.
