(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 8) Heavy rain has hit Chongqing, China since June 6, with flood control and geological disaster emergency responses in Hechuan District raised to the highest Level 1. Across Chongqing, nine rivers briefly exceeded warning levels, and 30 districts and counties experienced torrential rain.

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency, Chongqing Daily, and The Beijing News, heavy rainfall began on the night of June 6 across Chongqing, with most areas experiencing showers or thunderstorms, and some areas seeing heavy to extremely heavy downpours.

Data from the Chongqing Hydrological Monitoring Station shows that from 8:00 a.m. on June 7 to 8:00 a.m. on June 8, nine rivers in Chongqing exceeded warning levels. Torrential rain occurred in 30 districts and counties, including Liangjiang New Area, Shapingba, and Jiulongpo. Of these, 15 districts and counties, including Fuling, Jiulongpo, and Nan'an, experienced extremely heavy rain. The highest daily rainfall was 164.5 mm recorded in Mawang Town, Youyang County, Chongqing.

At noon on June 7, both the flood control and geological disaster emergency responses in Hechuan District, Chongqing, were raised to the highest Level 1.

The Chongqing Hydrological Monitoring Station predicts that from 8:00 a.m. on June 8 to 8:00 a.m. on June 9, water levels in some small and medium rivers in western Chongqing may rise to varying degrees, with individual rivers possibly exceeding warning levels.

An online video showed a child and an adult being swept away by the torrent during the rainstorm on June 7, with the child wearing a school uniform. According to the Diaoyucheng Subdistrict Office in Hechuan, the adult and child who were swept away were rescued and were not injured. Hechuan District was hit by a sudden heavy rainstorm that day, and the Hechuan District Meteorological Bureau issued a "Red Rainstorm Warning Signal," advising residents to avoid unnecessary outings and to suspend outdoor work and activities as appropriate.

Another online video showed that on June 7, water levels in some areas of Hechuan District reached over 2 meters, submerging many vehicles.

Reports also indicate that June 7 was the first day of China's National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao). The Chongqing municipal government closely monitored high-risk flooding areas, designating areas around exam venues, major urban roads, and key transportation hubs as core control zones. Personnel were assigned to these locations for round-the-clock monitoring to ensure safe passage for Gaokao examinees. (Editor: Chen Kaiyu / Lyu Jiarong) 1150608
