Key News on Russia's Invasion of Ukraine
(Brussels, 8th, Central News Agency correspondent Wu Bowei) The European Union pointed out that Western sanctions have cost Russia an estimated $1.2 to $1.5 trillion (approximately NT$37.8 trillion to NT$47.3 trillion). The EU is considering adding over 80 new sanctions targets, gradually dismantling the foundations of Russia's war economy.
EU member states' defense ministers held an informal meeting in Cyprus from the 7th to the 8th. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas held a press conference during the meeting.
According to a release from the European External Action Service (EEAS), Kallas stated that the defense ministers reaffirmed their support for Ukraine during the meeting and demonstrated a stance of applying more pressure on Russia.
She said that on the battlefield, time is no longer on Russia's side. Russian President Vladimir Putin is losing money, soldiers, and momentum, which is why Russia is intensifying its attacks on Ukrainian civilians. According to data, Western sanctions are estimated to have cost Russia $1.2 to $1.5 trillion.
Kallas further explained that at next week's EU Foreign Affairs Council, relevant EU departments will propose adding over 80 new sanctions targets, directly targeting Russia's military-industrial complex, human rights violators, and political propagandists, gradually dismantling the foundations of Russia's war economy.
She mentioned that the defense ministers also discussed deepening defense industrial cooperation with Ukraine, particularly regarding the most urgently needed air defense capabilities. Meanwhile, a €90 billion loan for Ukraine is ready, with the first tranche of €5.9 billion to be disbursed this month for drones. The allocation of funds is based on Ukraine's needs as the highest priority. (Editor: Tang Shengyang) 1150609
