(CNA, Tokyo, 8th, Comprehensive External Report) After a strong earthquake occurred near the Philippines today, Japan issued a tsunami advisory for a wide area along its Pacific coast and lifted all tsunami advisories at 4:50 PM. The Meteorological Agency has called for continued attention to possible ongoing changes in sea level.
According to NHK, the tsunami advisory issued by the Meteorological Agency earlier today covered a total of 10 prefectures, from Okinawa to Ibaraki.
Tsunamis successively reached a wide area of Japan's Pacific coast, as well as the southern Okinawa and Amami regions. Among them, a 30-centimeter-high tsunami was observed at Miyazaki Port today. A 20-centimeter tsunami was measured in the Chichijima area of the Ogasawara Islands, Kushimoto-cho in Wakayama Prefecture, and the Kumano area of Tanegashima in Kagoshima Prefecture.
The Meteorological Agency predicted that a larger tsunami was unlikely to occur, and therefore lifted all tsunami advisories at 4:50 PM (3:50 PM Taipei time), about 8 hours after they were issued.
Japan's Meteorological Agency's tsunami warnings are divided into three levels: a "Tsunami Advisory" for tsunami heights below 1 meter; a "Tsunami Warning" for heights between 1 and 3 meters; and a "Major Tsunami Warning" is issued for tsunami heights of 3 meters or more.
The Meteorological Agency stated that sea levels may continue to change for about the next day in coastal areas from Okinawa Prefecture to Ibaraki Prefecture, and urged the public to remain cautious about safety during beach activities and sea fishing.
