(Central News Agency, Riga, June 8, Combined Foreign Reports) Latvia's military stated that a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) fighter jet shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace from Russia today. This is the latest in a series of similar security incidents along Europe's eastern border.

According to a Reuters report, the source of the drone could not be immediately confirmed.

In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its long-range drone attacks on Russia, with operations covering the Baltic Sea region. Several Ukrainian military drones have mistakenly entered the airspace of Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.

Latvia's military posted on social media platform X: "Allied fighter jets successfully shot down a drone that flew into Latvian airspace!"

Latvia's military noted that local authorities had earlier today warned residents in eastern Latvia to take shelter indoors due to a threat. The alert was lifted after the drone was shot down.

The incursion of military drones into the airspace of Russia's neighbors has heightened concerns that the Ukraine war could spill over into NATO's northern border. Last month, a NATO aircraft also shot down a suspected Ukrainian drone over Estonian airspace. (Translator: Gao Fenfen / Editor: Yang Zhaoyan) 1150608
