(Central News Agency, reporter Jiang Mingyan, Taipei, June 8) Following a sharp drop in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) on Wall Street, Taiwan's stock market plunged 2,694 points at the open on Monday, setting a record for the largest intraday drop. The decline later narrowed by nearly 1,000 points, with the TAIEX recovering above the monthly moving average of 43,108 points. TSMC's losses narrowed to around NT$60, closing at NT$2,305, a decline of 2.54%. Some heavyweight stocks and PCB-related stocks attracted bargain hunting.

U.S. stocks fell sharply last Friday, with the SOX plunging 10.26%. The market fears that the AI stock rally may end prematurely due to rising interest rates. Japan's Nikkei and South Korea's KOSPI fell about 4% and 6%, respectively, during the session.

The TAIEX opened at 44,507.49 points and fell to an intraday low of 42,376.86 points, a drop of 2,694 points, setting a new record for the largest intraday point decline. Bargain hunters then stepped in, paring losses.

As of around 10:20 a.m., the TAIEX was down 1,817.32 points, or 4.03%, at 43,253.62 points. The electronics sub-index fell 4.12%, the financial sub-index fell 3.58%, and the over-the-counter (OTC) index fell 6.18%.

Among heavyweights, TSMC's losses narrowed to 2.54%, trading at NT$2,305. MediaTek fell over 6%, while Delta Electronics, Hon Hai Precision Industry, and Yageo fell about 5%.

Memory chip stocks opened lower but pared losses. Nanya Technology and Winbond Electronics fell about 5%, while Macronix International fell over 8%. Panel makers AUO and Innolux hit the 10% daily limit down. PCB stocks attracted bargain buying, with Unimicron, Nan Ya PCB, Gold Circuit Electronics, and Zhen Ding Technology paring their losses.

Among high-priced stocks, ASPEED Technology's losses narrowed significantly. WinWay Technology turned positive. King Slide hit the 10% daily limit up. Chunghwa Precision Test Tech, Innodisk, and Gold Circuit Electronics were in positive territory. Taiwan Union Technology and Yongzhi Technology hit the daily limit down.
