The Financial Times reported on the 6th that AI giant OpenAI is planning the largest-scale overhaul of ChatGPT in its history. The overhaul aims to transform ChatGPT into a 'super app' equipped with code development tools and AI Agent functions, to boost revenue and prepare for a potential initial public offering (IPO).

According to the Financial Times, citing more than 10 current and former employees, this transformation is part of a larger organizational restructuring at OpenAI. The company is reallocating resources to focus on the high-profit enterprise customer market and intensifying competition with rival Anthropic.

The overhaul will give OpenAI's code development product, Codex, more resources and exposure. Related updates are expected to roll out over the next few weeks, first on the ChatGPT website and mobile app.

To increase usage, OpenAI is redesigning the ChatGPT interface, introducing new prompts and features that guide users toward code development functions, image generation services, and partner services like Canva and Booking.com.

The Financial Times added that most Codex users are paid subscribers, and 2 million enterprise users account for approximately 40% of OpenAI's revenue. OpenAI expects this proportion to rise to 50% by the end of the year.

This reform also reflects a significant strategic shift within OpenAI. A senior OpenAI employee told the Financial Times, 'Chat is dead,' indicating the company's growing belief that the future of AI lies not in chatbots that answer questions, but in AI Agents that perform tasks for users.

Thibault Sottiaux, head of core product and platform business, said the company is moving toward building personal AI Agents, aiming to help users with work and life tasks through their phones, computers, or other devices.

The Financial Times noted that OpenAI's strategy is increasingly aligning with Anthropic, which focuses on the enterprise market. This year, OpenAI has integrated product teams for ChatGPT and Codex, while some consumer-oriented projects have been shelved to concentrate resources on expanding enterprise customer business.

Earlier this year, OpenAI stated that ChatGPT has over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million consumer subscribers.

Reuters could not immediately verify the Financial Times report. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Reuters reported last month that OpenAI is preparing to confidentially file for a U.S. IPO within the next few weeks. However, CEO Sam Altman said the company is not fixated on a timeline and will go public at the right time.
