(CNA, Taipei, June 7, Reporter: Chang Hsiung-feng) The Central Weather Administration today issued a high-temperature advisory for the Changhua, Yunlin, Tainan, Hualien, and Taitung regions, warning of temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius. Weather expert Wu Der-rong stated that the peak period of the plum rain season will begin tomorrow and last until the 16th, bringing the threat of severe weather and disastrous rainfall.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Central Weather Administration issued a high-temperature advisory today. The weather is hot and sultry, with a chance of foehn wind in Taitung County. During the day, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Tainan City, Hualien County, and Taitung County are under a yellow alert for high temperatures exceeding 36 degrees.

Wu Der-rong, an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University, wrote in his column "Hsieh Tien Chi Classroom" for the Weather Application and Promotion Foundation that the latest European model simulation shows that today will be partly cloudy to clear across the island with hot daytime temperatures. In the morning, the southwest will still experience brief, localized showers from residual land breezes. In the afternoon, strong convective systems will develop over mountainous areas and expand to some plains, and attention should be paid to the accompanying severe weather, such as lightning, strong winds, and sudden heavy downpours.

Wu stated that according to the latest model simulations, from tomorrow until the 16th, the fifth stationary front of the plum rain season will linger over the north and south, coinciding with the prevailing southwest monsoon, pushing Taiwan into a typical peak plum rain period. Starting tomorrow, as the front approaches, the area of strong convection will gradually expand. On the 11th, it will shift slightly south, with strong convection concentrated in the central and southern regions. On the 12th, it will move north again, with strong convection expanding to cover the entire island.

Furthermore, Wu pointed out that during this period, the atmosphere will be highly unstable, making it easy for small- and medium-scale convective systems to be triggered, bringing the threat of severe weather and disastrous rainfall. All regions should pay special attention to the CWA's advisories and prepare for disasters in advance.

As for how long the peak plum rain period will last, Wu said that the latest European and American simulations show it will continue until at least the 16th. Although the patterns have slightly changed and show some differences, the conditions for heavy rain persist. However, model simulations beyond 10 days have increased uncertainty and lower reliability, so continued observation is necessary. (Editor: Wu Su-jou) 1150607
